The common symptoms of forgetfulness in 20s.
Forgetfulness happens across the lifespan. Although it is more evident among older adults, young people do forget sometimes. Have you been experiencing it? Have you forgotten important things? Well, that is pretty normal.
Among older adults, forgetfulness is associated with more serious psychological problems. But if you’re not elderly, you don’t have to worry about it. The brain naturally forgets sometimes. It may be caused by stress, medication, lack of sleep and hormonal changes.
The forgetfulness among young people is temporary and easy to solve. It happens to all of us. This only means that even the young forget things sometimes. It is pretty normal actually. So if you experience it, don’t freak out. It only means that you’re a normal human being.
In this post, I will be sharing with you some of the common causes of forgetfulness that might also happen to you lately.
Stress is a more serious thing than you think. It affects not only your physical but also your mental health. It hinders the brain and the mind to function well. As a result, your cognitive functioning including memory suffers.
Stress activates the production of a certain enzyme called the Protein Kinase C which could sabotage our memory. It hinders our brain from gaining focus and concentration and the ability to deal with stressful situations.
A stressful situation consumes our mind making us forget other things. This is the reason why we mostly experience forgetfulness when we are stressed.
If you are rushing things, you tend to multitask. Multitasking is common in office workers and students. Unfortunately, multitasking is not as effective as it seems. In fact, it deteriorates performance in any given task. The reason being is that the brain will not be able to attend to multiple stimuli at a given time. It prevents the formation of strong neural connection making the newly learned information lost.
3. Sleep deprivation
The lack of sleep is one of the causes of symptoms of forgetfulness in 20s. Most adolescents spend more time on social media or gadgets resulting in an insufficient amount of sleep. Lack of sleep could cause stress and anxiety which in turn cause forgetfulness. If having lack of sleep continues, a person may become more stressed and therefore suffers more occurrences of forgetfulness.
Depression can also contribute to the occurrence of forgetfulness. Depressed individuals have hard times remembering things. This is one of the reasons why depressed young people struggle in school due to the inability to focus and concentrate on the academic tasks assigned to them. Depression disturbs the whole cognitive process leading to more frequent forgetfulness.
But the effect of depression on memory is dependent on the depression itself. When depression is resolved, the person’s cognition may go back to normal.
If you are taking medications and you’re experiencing forgetfulness more often than usual, that is probably the effect of the medication. This reaction is normal for most people who are undergoing a series of medical interventions.
Although there is not enough scientific evidence on this claim, some pregnant mothers claimed to have the occurrence of forgetfulness throughout the pregnancy period. The common indicators are misplacing items in their room or in the house. But again, this assumption is not yet proven scientifically.
Symptoms of forgetfulness in 20s can be the result of many things. One way to avoid it is by developing a healthy habit. Eat healthy foods, exercise and avoid stress. Healthy living may not only nourish your body but also your memory especially when you are young.
